From the Third Sector to CleaningPlus: Why Prevention Didn’t Disappear — It Just Changed Shape
For over two decades, I worked in the third sector with the British Red Cross, supporting people through moments where life quietly tipped from “coping” into “crisis”.
Not emergencies with sirens. The slow, unseen ones.
Hospital discharges. People living alone. Those who didn’t need personal care — but absolutely needed support, reassurance, routine, and someone to notice when things began to slide.
We knew something then that still holds true now: intervening early changes outcomes.
Six weeks of structured, free support — delivered by trained volunteers, professionally guided by paid staff — consistently prevented escalation. It reduced readmissions. It delayed care packages. It gave people confidence, dignity, and time.
It worked because it sat just before the system was forced to act.
Much of that work has now gone. Funding cuts, contracts ending, services closing faster than they can be rebuilt. The hidden layer that propped up the system — absorbed pressure, protected flow, prevented crisis — has thinned dramatically.
The people didn’t disappear. The support did.
What also hasn’t gone away is the point at which care begins.
In my experience, isolation is the single biggest accelerator into care.
Isolation precedes mental health decline, neglect of the home environment, reduced motivation and confidence, and earlier reliance on formal services.
Once isolation takes hold, even small problems become overwhelming. The system is then called in — not because care is strictly needed, but because there is no buffer left.
This is where the system jams.
CleaningPlus exists because that early-intervention space still matters — even if the traditional third-sector structures around it have shrunk.
It is not a replacement for care. It is not a workaround for the NHS. It is not medicalised support.
It sits deliberately upstream.
A consistent weekly presence. A trained pair of eyes. Conversation. Routine. Light practical support. A reason for someone to keep their environment — and themselves — stable.
This isn’t theoretical. I’ve seen this model in action for years under different names, structures, and funding streams.
The outcomes were clear: people stayed independent longer, crisis escalation slowed, formal care was delayed — sometimes by years — and pressure on hospitals and services reduced.
One visit a week, done properly, often changed the trajectory entirely.
This isn’t about optimism. It’s about recognising patterns that repeat themselves when prevention disappears.
When early support vanishes, care needs arrive sooner, crisis becomes the entry point, costs rise, and outcomes worsen.
When early support exists, independence lasts longer, systems breathe, and people feel seen before they feel desperate.
CleaningPlus is a practical expression of that evidence — shaped for a world where we can no longer assume the third sector will always be funded to catch people in time.
