Home care or a care home in Southend? A quick comparison

Southend-on-Sea has a large number of care homes — but moving into one is no longer the default. In fact, most long-term care arranged by the local council in Southend is now delivered in people’s own homes, because that is where most people want to be.

  • Staying at home: home care keeps your loved one in familiar surroundings, near the seafront, the shops and the neighbours they know, with support that flexes as needs change.
  • Cost: the average care home in Southend costs around £1,450 a week (typically £1,200–£1,500). For people who do not yet need 24-hour supervision, hourly home care can work out considerably cheaper while giving one-to-one attention.
  • Couples: home care can keep partners together at home, rather than separating them between settings.

If a care home does become the right choice later, we can help you think it through — but for many Southend families, the right home care package is all they need.

The cost of home care in Southend-on-Sea, explained honestly

Cost is usually the first question — and you deserve a straight answer. In Southend, a private home carer generally costs between £18 and £35 an hour, with most people paying somewhere around £25 to £32. The right figure for you depends on a few things:

  • Independent carer vs managed agency: a directly hired carer can be cheaper, but you take on employer responsibilities; a regulated agency price covers training, insurance, supervision and cover when a carer is unwell.
  • Visit length: very short visits (30–45 minutes) carry a higher proportional rate than longer ones.
  • Timing: evenings and weekends usually add roughly £2–£5 an hour, and bank holidays are often charged at a higher, sometimes double, rate.
  • Complexity: advanced dementia, palliative support or complex moving-and-handling can sit at the higher end, around £35+ an hour.

Alternatives to hourly care

  • Overnight care: typically £150–£260 a night, depending on whether it is a sleeping or a waking night.
  • Live-in care: a full-time carer in the home generally averages around £1,100–£1,700 a week — often more cost-effective than two care home placements for a couple.

Whatever the level of support, your SESNHA quote is bespoke, with a clear written breakdown so there are no surprises.

Help with paying for care in Southend

Southend-on-Sea is its own unitary authority, so social care here is arranged through Southend-on-Sea City Council (not Essex County Council). The funding routes are:

  • Council funding (means test): the council carries out a care needs assessment followed by a financial assessment. If savings and assets are below £23,250, you may receive help — and the value of your home is not counted while care is provided in it.
  • Direct payments: if you qualify for council support, you can take a direct payment and choose your own provider, including SESNHA.
  • NHS Continuing Healthcare: for complex, ongoing health needs, the NHS may fund care in full, including at home. Eligibility is based on need, not diagnosis.
  • Benefits: Attendance Allowance is not means-tested and can help towards the cost of care, whatever your savings.

Care that looks beyond the label — a word from our Registered Manager

“Look beyond the problem. Understand the person.”

Long before he led services for the British Red Cross — work for which he received the Dunant Award — Mark Bradley, Registered Manager at SESNHA Care, learned first-hand what it feels like to be judged by something that only tells part of your story. Diagnosed as dyslexic as a child, he grew up believing he simply was not good enough, when in truth he just learned differently.

“The label rarely tells you who the person really is,” Mark says. “Families in Southend worry about dementia. People worry that accepting help at home means losing their independence. The details differ, but the feeling is the same — nobody wants to be reduced to a diagnosis. That is exactly why we lead with the person.

“Whether we are helping someone stay independent at home, supporting with the cleaning, providing dedicated home care, getting someone back out into their community, or simply taking the time to listen — the principle never changes. Every person has a story, and understanding that story is where real care begins.”

Home care in Southend-on-Sea — frequently asked questions

How much does a home carer cost per hour in the UK?

In 2026, a home carer through a regulated agency typically costs between £26 and £38 an hour across the UK, with a national average of around £32. In Southend-on-Sea specifically, prices generally run from £18 to £35 an hour, with most people paying around £25 to £32. How much does a care home cost in Southend-on-Sea?

A residential care home in Southend-on-Sea costs around £1,450 a week on average, typically in the range of £1,200 to £1,500, with nursing homes costing more. That fee usually covers accommodation, meals, personal care and 24-hour staffing. For people who do not yet need round-the-clock supervision, home care can be a more affordable and more personal alternative — one-to-one support in your own home, for as many or as few hours as you need.

Can I get home care on the NHS?

Sometimes, depending on why the care is needed. Ongoing help with everyday tasks — washing, dressing, meals, housework — is classed as social care and is usually arranged and means-tested through Southend-on-Sea City Council rather than funded by the NHS. However, the NHS does fund care in some situations: NHS Continuing Healthcare can pay for care in full, including at home, where someone has a complex, ongoing health need; and after a hospital stay or illness you may receive free short-term reablement (intermediate) care for up to six weeks. Ask your GP, hospital team or social worker which route applies.

Are there any care homes in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex?

Yes — Westcliff-on-Sea, which is part of Southend-on-Sea, has a good number of residential and nursing homes, including well-known seafront homes such as Crowstone House and Milton House, among many others. A care home is the right answer for some people. But if your loved one would rather stay in their own home in Westcliff, home care is the alternative: the same personal and dementia support delivered where they are most comfortable. We are happy to talk through both options with you.
